Abandoned by his birth parents as an infant, Lucian was discovered by Sylveth Borridian, the youngest daughter of the elvish Borridian family of Waterdeep. He was taken in by the family and named as one of their own (the only remnants of his Drow heritage lying in his given middle name, Phaequl).
Growing up in the Borridian family – as it turned out, one of Waterdeep’s most prominent trading families – brought many benefits, not least of which was the quality of education in one of the city’s most racially diverse academies, where Lucian learnt Draconic.
Upon entering his teenage years, Lucian was supported in his aspiration to become an artisan blacksmith by his adoptive father, Beiro Borridian. He worked hard for the next five years, before finally graduating at the age of eighteen with a burgeoning list of clients already wanting to sample his goods.
The Borridian name paired with Lucian’s natural aptitude and skill was an unbeatable combination, leading to some of the most successful and profitable trading the family had ever seen. Over the next six years, Lucian’s blades became famous well beyond the walls of Waterdeep. Those wielding them would speak of a deftness and precision that they had never witnessed before, and people started to travel from all over the Sword Coast to view the man himself at work.
Around the time of his twenty-fifth birthday, Lucian was kidnapped by four Lolth priests during the night. In the commotion that ensued, Beiro Borridian was awakened and confronted the intruders, only to be brutally struck down, dying just hours later. Lucian was dragged from Waterdeep back to the depths of Underdark, his slummped, drugged figure presented to the head of the Xulgos house.
Upon waking, Lucian found himself bound and was subjected to remorseless questioning. It was claimed that he was, infact, an illegitimate child of the Xulgos household who had been cast out to die. As soon as word of his blacksmithing talent had reached Underdark, it had not taken long for this ‘reunion’ to be arranged (after all, how many Drow do you find living peacefully among other kin).
Lucian’s flat refusal to work for the Xulgos household – for that is what they demanded of him – lead to him being cast out for a second time. However, this time he was cast out into the city, homeless, but unable to leave the confines. His life became increasingly nightmarish, as he was constantly ridiculed and attacked by those around him; day by day existence became very trying and Lucian began to resort to petty crime.
After two years walking the streets (and eight months of planning) Lucian finally managed to escape Underdark, hidden amongst the wares of a passing trade caravan, whose dwarven owner, Thoradin Vondal, he was previously on good business terms with.
Lucian accompanied Thoradin as far as Selgaunt, where he currently finds himself. He yearns to return to Waterdeep, to protect his adoptive family and save the new struggling business. His newly found lust for vengeance toward his father’s killers also runs deep – a strong emotion which Lucian has not before experienced. One which feels a little too close to his true Drow origin for comfort.
